  1.         SmartPics Sampler for Windows -- README.TXT
  2.  
  3. This document contains important information which is not included in the
  4. SmartPics for Windows printed documentation.  It provides information on:
  5.  
  6. o Using the SmartPics SmartIcon in other Lotus products
  7. o Using SmartPics as an OLE server
  8. o Using SmartPics with other applications
  9.  
  10.  
  11. ** Using the SmartPics SmartIcon in Other Lotus Products **
  12.  
  13. You can have quick access to SmartPics from both Ami Pro and Lotus 
  14. 1-2-3 for Windows using the SmartPics SmartIcon.  Follow the procedures
  15. below to install the SmartPics SmartIcon in each of these products:
  16.  
  17. - Installing the SmartPics SmartIcon in Ami Pro:
  18.  
  19. 1.  Copy SMARTPIC.BMP to your Ami Pro directory
  20.     (e.g., copy c:\smartpic\smartpic.bmp c:\amipro).
  21.  
  22. 2.  Copy SMARTPIC.SMM to your Ami Pro macros directory
  23.     (e.g., copy c:\smartpic\smartpic.smm c:\amipro\macros).
  24.  
  25. 3.  From the Ami Pro menu bar, choose Tools SmartIcons.
  26.  
  27. 4.  In the SmartIcons dialog box, click the Customize button.
  28.  
  29. 5.  In the Customize SmartIcons dialog box, scroll through the Tools
  30.     Custom Icons window until the SmartPics light bulb icon appears.
  31.  
  32. 6.  Drag the SmartPics icon into the Current Palette window.
  33.  
  34. 7.  Click Assign Macro.
  35.  
  36. 8.  In the Assign Macro dialog box, click Next Icon until the SmartPics 
  37.     light bulb appears in the Selected Icon window, then select 
  38.     SMARTPIC.SMM in the Macros list box.
  39.  
  40. 9.  Click Save, and then click OK in each dialog box until you return 
  41.     to the main Ami Pro screen. The SmartPics SmartIcon is now 
  42.     accessible.
  43.  
  44.     For more information on using macros in Ami Pro, refer to your 
  45.     Ami Pro documentation.
  46.  
  47.     NOTE:  If you did not place SmartPics for Windows in c:\smartpic, 
  48.     you must also edit the SmartPics macro file to show the proper
  49.     path:
  50.  
  51.    1.  From the Ami Pro menu bar, choose Tools Macro Edit.
  52.      
  53.    2.  In the Edit Macro dialog box, choose SMARTPIC.SMM and click OK.
  54.  
  55.    3.  Change the statement:
  56.  
  57.        "defdir="c:\smartpic"
  58.  
  59.        to reflect the path where you installed SmartPics.
  60.  
  61.    4.  Double-click the control menu box in the top left corner of the 
  62.        editing window to close the window.  Ami Pro asks if you want to
  63.        save the changes to the macro.  Click Yes.
  64.  
  65. - Installing the SmartPics SmartIcon in 1-2-3 for Windows:
  66.  
  67. 1.  Copy SMARTPIC.BMP and SMARTPIC.MAC to your 123\sheetico directory
  68.     (e.g., copy c:\smartpic\smartpic.bmp c:\123\sheetico).
  69.  
  70. 2.  From the 1-2-3 menu bar, choose Tools SmartIcons.
  71.  
  72. 3.  In the Tools SmartIcons dialog box, click the Customize button.
  73.  
  74. 4.  In the Tools SmartIcons Customize dialog box, scroll through the
  75.     Custom Icons window until the SmartPics light bulb icon appears.
  76.  
  77. 5.  Select the SmartPics icon and click Assign Macro.
  78.  
  79. 6.  In the Tools SmartIcons Customize Assign Macro dialog box, the
  80.     macro SMARTPIC.MAC will appear.
  81.  
  82.     NOTE: If you installed SmartPics for Windows in a directory    other
  83.     than c:\smartpic, edit the macro to show the alternative directory.
  84.  
  85. 7.  Click OK.
  86.  
  87. 8.  In the Tools SmartIcons Customize dialog box, click Add.
  88.  
  89. 9.  Click OK to close each dialog box until you return to the main
  90.     1-2-3 screen.
  91.  
  92.     For more information on using macros in 1-2-3, refer to your 1-2-3
  93.     documentation.

  96. NOTE:  The SmartPics program directory contains three bitmaps for the
  97. SmartPics SmartIcon, one for each monitor resolution.  
  98.  
  99. o SMARTPIC.VGA (for VGA monitors)
  100. o SMARTPIC.EGA (for EGA monitors)
  101. o SMARTPIC.851 (for 8514 monitors)
  102.  
  103. The program directory also contains a bitmap called SMARTPIC.BMP.  This
  104. bitmap controls how the SmartPics SmartIcon displays.  When you install
  105. SmartPics, the install program tries to determine the type of monitor
  106. you have and automatically copies the appropriate bitmap to 
  107. SMARTPIC.BMP. 
  108.  
  109. If you change the type of monitor you have after you install SmartPics, 
  110. you should copy the appropriate SmartIcon bitmap to SMARTPIC.BMP.  This
  111. adjusts the display of the SmartPics SmartIcon for your monitor.  For
  112. example, if you had a VGA monitor when you installed SmartPics, but now
  113. have an 8514 monitor, you should copy SMARTPIC.851 to SMARTPIC.BMP.
  114.  
  115. ** Using SmartPics As an OLE Server **
  116.  
  117. SmartPics can run in either of two modes.  When you access SmartPics
  118. from the Windows Program Manager, SmartPics runs in normal mode and
  119. runs as a freestanding Windows application.   In this mode, SmartPics
  120. does not copy images to the Windows Clipboard in the following formats:
  121.  
  122. o native
  123. o owner link
  124. o object link
  125.  
  126. When you access SmartPics from within applications that support Object 
  127. Linking and Embedding (OLE), SmartPics runs as a mini-OLE server.  In
  128. this mode, SmartPics does not support linking.  
  129.  
  130. **  Using SmartPics with Other Applications **
  131.  
  132. You can use SmartPics images in a wide variety of applications.  When 
  133. you copy a SmartPics image to paste into another application, by 
  134. default, SmartPics copies the image in the Windows metafile format (WMF). 
  135. This format produces the best results.
  136.  
  137. For applications that do not support the metafile format, SmartPics 
  138. offers two additional formats: Device Independent Bitmap (DIB) and 
  139. Bitmap (BMP).  You can choose a format in the SmartPics Options dialog 
  140. box.
  141.  
  142. When using SmartPics images in other applications, keep in mind the
  143. following:
  144.  
  145. - If you try to paste a SmartPics image into an application and the
  146.   paste function is not available, that application may not support
  147.   the format that you used to copy the SmartPics image (metafile, 
  148.   Device Independent Bitmap, or bitmap).
  149.  
  150.   In the SmartPics Options dialog box, choose another format and copy 
  151.   the image again.  Then try to paste it into the other application.
  152.  
  153. - Sometimes, when you paste a SmartPics image into an application the 
  154.   image may not appear optimally, for example, it may appear grainy
  155.   or speckled.  
  156.  
  157.   In the SmartPics Options dialog box, choose the Windows metafile 
  158.   format to obtain optimal results.
  159.  
  160. - Sometimes, when you copy a SmartPics image using the Windows 
  161.   metafile format (the default) and paste it into some applications, for
  162.   example, Word Perfect for Windows 5.1, images with white flesh tones 
  163.   appear gray.
  164.  
  165.   In the SmartPics Options dialog box, choose the Black line art 
  166.   symbols option for the version of the symbols you want to use.
